This is the online home of Lizzie Wilder* Williams.
I have had a life-long passion for natural history, environmental issues and community, and worked for five years for the wildlife conservation organisation Fauna & Flora International in Cambridge.
Seeking new adventures and a more hands-on experience, for five years I lived on the island of Tanera Mòr in the Summer Isles, North West Highlands of Scotland. No roads or shops; year-round population: three. Whilst running a small tourism business with my husband, and tending to the needs of our small daughter, I wrote articles for various publications including a regular column for the magazine Scottish Islands Explorer as well as various other publications such as Earthlines Magazine.
In 2013 we moved off the Island to start a new life just across the water in the equally-spectacular (but slightly more convenient) location of Coigach. Whilst still managing Tanera – and two small children – writing slowed somewhat over the past few years. However, I enjoyed writing a couple of ‘Springwatch‘ pieces for our local ‘Coigach Newsletter’ during Lockdown.
Tanera was sold in 2017; I worked for the new owner for three years – helping to manage a hugely different project – and have now left to focus on my real passions: the urgent environmental issues facing the planet, our Highland communities … and those two small children.
Since October 2020 I have been working freelance and have been lucky enough to work on several fascinating projects:
- Coordinating and writing Stage 1 and Stage 2 funding applications for the Endangered Landscapes Programme, working with 27 partners across the North West Highlands, entitled ‘North West Regenerate’. We will hear the outcome of Stage 2 in mid-April 2022.
- Providing writing support for the NorthWest2045 Vision for NorthWest2045 Partnership (June – October 2021)
- Researching and writing The Story of Achlochan for Coigach Heritage and Coigach & Assynt Living Landscape Partnership (May 2021)
- Researching and writing evocative prose for the Sense of Place Toolkit for North West Highlands Geopark and Coigach & Assynt Living Landscape Partnership (November 2020 – May 2021)
- Researching and writing the Outdoor and Woodland Learning Business Feasibility Study for Culag Community Woodland Trust and Coigach & Assynt Living Landscape Partnership (October 2020 – March 2021)
I have also been working part-time at The Achiltibuie Garden, helping produce sustainable locally grown food for local people. This is a hugely important issue – for both people and planet – and one that I hope to pursue further.
(*Wilder is my middle name – it was my maiden name and I kept it with me because I like it. And because it sort-of fits with life…)
